SCCI working to address the Energy Crisis in Samoa
The Samoa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) is currently working on addressing the impacts of the recent and on-going energy crisis on the private sector. Earlier in March, the SCCI submitted a letter to the Electric Power Corporation and a submission to the Disaster Advisory Committee seeking urgent Government intervention and assistance on the energy challenge and its now significant impacts on the business community.
SCCI also conducted a rapid survey on the Impacts of Power Outages on Businesses on the 11 – 20 March 2025, to capture how the recent power outages are impacting businesses and highlight back up and mitigation measures that are being utilized. The results of this survey will also assist SCCI in providing the necessary evidence and data to the Government in support of its submission to commence discussion and inform decision making in determining relevant solutions and possible compensation as warranted going forward. The Survey Report has been submitted to Government through the Disaster Advisory Committee to inform decision making on any appropriate measures or assistance to businesses and community.
As the public of Samoa is now aware, the Proclamation of Emergency (POE) for 30 days, is in effect starting from 12am Monday 31 March to Tuesday 29th April 2025. As we await the finalisation and approval of the State of Emergency (SOE) Order including immediate approved response actions and measures, your Chamber again strongly encourage all businesses to register with our Office. This will ensure inclusiveness of all and Chamber to provide you with regular updates and notices as well as on any assistance that may or will be available to businesses.
The SCCI and Government together with EPC are currently working together to address on-going short term challenges and solutions to minimize further disruptions and impacts on businesses and their operations. Your Chamber will continue to update our business members through notices during and throughout the SOE and recovery period.
The SCCI President and Council seeks the patience and support of the private sector at this time while we work alongside the Government to address this crisis and to mitigate further impacts to the businesses and households.
